A New Monospace Luxury Car Proposal
Renault unveiled the 'Initiale Paris' concept car, a successor to the minivan 'Espace,' at the Frankfurt Motor Show. This is the final model in a series of six concept cars that mark the completion of the design renaissance initiated by Renault's chief designer, Laurens van den Acker.
To coincide with the unveiling of the 'Initiale Paris' concept car, Renault is also exhibiting the five previously announced concept cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The 'Initiale Paris' embodies 'Wisdom,' the previously unrevealed theme of Renault's design renaissance. As we have reportedRenault has divided life into six important stages, likening them to 'six petals,' and has been announcing concept cars for each theme.
These six stages are represented by the three phases of falling in love ('Love'), traveling the world as a couple ('Exploration'), and starting a family ('Family'), along with the three key keywords of 'Work,' 'Play,' and 'Wisdom.' Furthermore, each has a theme color, and the concept cars announced so far have sported body colors that align with their themes.
As mentioned, the concept car 'Initiale Paris,' unveiled this time, represents 'Wisdom.' Its theme color is purple. Simultaneously, it is said to create a new design language for the Renault brand in the premium segment, embodying styling that is simple, sensual, and warm.
The actual styling can be described as a new kind of crossover, blending the character of a sleek, low-slung minivan with the dynamic stance of an SUV with ample ground clearance. Its 22-inch wheels, uniquely treated glass roof, and voluminous rear section are particularly striking.
Another distinctive feature is the adoption of a honeycomb design, inspired by the shape of a diamond, used repeatedly in the vehicle's interior and exterior, such as the grille, wheels, and the floor area revealed when the hinged rear doors open. This design not only evokes aircraft frames but was also inspired by iconic Parisian structures like the Grand Palais and the Eiffel Tower. It can be said to express the car's name, 'Initiale Paris,' through its design.

The interior is characterized by a cohesive design that effectively uses aluminum and wood. The matte-finished walnut creates a sophisticated and calm atmosphere, while chrome accents add a futuristic touch. The concept model features a three-row seating layout with a bench seat in the third row, whose backrests are divided into narrow, vertical sections and move functionally when folded. They can be partially folded to serve as armrests, and some can be folded independently according to the size of the cargo, allowing for unprecedented versatility.
Access is made easy by the adoption of coach doors and electric running boards. Thanks to these features, the floor height is not compromised. Conversely, these running boards and the wide-opening doors also serve as design highlights.
To enhance the enjoyment of long drives, the car features a BOSE sound system and a unique diamond-shaped glass roof that softly filters ambient light, incorporating numerous ideas to improve cabin comfort. The view from the seats, looking up at the roof from inside the car, is particularly impressive and unlike anything experienced in other vehicles. This can be seen as the embodiment of Renault's interpretation of 'hospitality' for a luxury car.
The engine is a twin-turbo 'dCI 130' that produces a peak torque of 400 Nm (40.8 kgm), paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. It achieves both environmental performance with low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 40 g/km, along with powerful driving, generating approximately 90 percent of its maximum torque from just 1,500 rpm.
Renault unequivocally calls the 'Initiale Paris' a luxury car. It features design, equipment, and performance that offer a truly luxurious experience for a more sensual life. This also serves as an antithesis to the conventional notion that luxury cars must be large sedans.
The 'Initiale Paris' concept car, the successor to the renowned 'Espace,' is more than just a three-row minivan. While its distinctive form, created with a new design language, is a highlight, it more importantly reflects Renault's vision for a new kind of monospace luxury car. The 'Espace,' discontinued 11 years ago, may soon make a comeback as a leading French luxury vehicle.
