A Lap Time Under 7 Minutes: 6:57

At the recentFrankfurt Motor Show, the production model 918 Spyder's world premierewas held by Porsche. To coincide with this announcement, the company revealed that the 918 Spyder had set a time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds on the Nürburgring Nordschleife (20.6 km length), a mark 14 seconds faster than the previous record.

The previous fastest lap for a road-legal production car, excluding racing cars, was 7 minutes and 11.57 seconds, set in 2009 by the Gumpert Apollo, a German automobile manufacturer. This new result significantly surpasses that benchmark.

For reference, looking back at past records,Lexusrecorded a time of 7 minutes and 14.64 seconds in August 2011 with the "Nürburgring Package" version of the "LFA." For Porsche production cars, the fastest time was 7 minutes and 18 seconds, set in May 2010 by the "911 GT2 RS."

Joining the two 918 Spyders for this time attack were three drivers: former rally champion Walter Röhrl, Porsche test driver Timo Kluck, and works driver Marc Lieb. Ultimately, Marc Lieb achieved the best time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds, with an average speed of 179.5 km/h.

The 918 Spyders prepared for this run were equipped with the optional "Weissach package" for enhanced driving dynamics and were fitted with standard Michelin tires developed specifically for the 918 Spyder.

The 918 Spyder is Porsche's new generation of super sports car, featuring a plug-in hybrid system. Its 4.6-liter V8 engine produces a maximum output of 447 kW (608 PS), which, combined with electric motors, delivers a total system output of 652 kW (887 PS). It boasts a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 345 km/h, performance rivaling that of a racing car.
