Joint Development with Tesla Motors
As Daimler is a shareholder, Mercedes-Benz has been researching electric mobility in collaboration with American EV manufacturerTesla Motors, yielding concrete results such as its application in the battery of the previous generation'sSmart Electric Drive. The "B-Class Electric Drive" revealed this time is also being developed in cooperation with EV pioneer Tesla Motors.
The electric motor installed in the B-Class Electric Drive has slightly changed from the figures announced in April, delivering a maximum output of 130 kW and a peak torque of 340 Nm. This substantial torque, comparable to a 3-liter gasoline engine, is available from the moment the accelerator is pressed, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 7.9 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h. The cruising range is approximately 200 km, depending on driving conditions.
The lithium-ion battery is housed in a robust, underfloor compartment called the "Energy Space" to ensure safety in the event of an accident. Consequently, passenger and luggage space are not compromised, allowing the B-Class to fully leverage its inherent utility. Charging to 100 km of range takes 1.5 hours with a 400V power supply, and less than 2 hours with the 240V supply common in the United States.
In addition to its low environmental impact and impressive acceleration, it features network connectivity, as expected of a modern vehicle. This allows owners to access the vehicle via a computer or smartphone to check charging status and remaining range. It also supports pre-conditioning the cabin temperature by activating the climate control remotely before getting in.
Standard safety equipment includes a radar-based Collision Prevention Assist (CPA). Additionally, optional features such as Blind Spot Assist, which alerts the driver to vehicles in the rear blind spots via mirror indicators, Lane Keeping Assist, and Active Parking Assist are available.
The B-Class Electric Drive will go on sale in the United States in 2014, with subsequent launches planned for Europe.
