The City's Symbol Reimagined with Nissan Vehicles!

In 2013, the New "Yellow Cab" Takes on the Streets of New York

The "Yellow Cab," New York City's iconic taxis, said to be used by 600,000 people daily, are undergoing a complete transformation. While retaining their distinctive body color, they will be reborn as 21st-century vehicles combining durability and comfort. Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. spearheaded this major undertaking. On April 4th, at a special event held in SoHo, the new Yellow Cab was unveiled.

The Next-Generation Taxi Reflecting the Voices of Drivers and Riders

The Statue of Liberty standing on Liberty Island, Times Square with its giant billboards and neon signs, Central Park, a haven for New Yorkers, the Metropolitan Museum of Art housing world-class masterpieces... Among the many symbols of New York City, one must not forget the yellow-bodied vehicles that transport us to these captivating spots: the taxis of New York City, affectionately known as the Yellow Cabs.

In 2007, the City of New York began its initiative to transform the Yellow Cab, serving as both a mode of transport for New Yorkers and a guide for tourists, into a more comfortable and convenient next-generation taxi. This project, named "Taxi of Tomorrow," evolved into an international competition in 2009 where manufacturers and designers worldwide vied for recognition. After two years of rigorous selection, Nissan's "NV200" was chosen by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission.

The NV200, based on the commercial van "NV200 Vanette" sold in Japan and worldwide, incorporates feedback from local taxi drivers, owners, and passengers. For instance, it offers a spacious interior, easy-to-use sliding doors, and various passenger-centric features such as reading lights, 12V power outlets, and USB ports. For New Yorkers troubled by noise, the ability to adjust horn volume in sync with headlights will be a welcome addition. For tourists with limited time, the "transparent ceiling" offering views of the towering skyscrapers from within the taxi will be a much-appreciated amenity.

Ahead of its full rollout in the latter half of 2013, Nissan is currently collaborating with Brown, a global leader in automotive-related products, to develop taxis that can accommodate wheelchairs. Furthermore, Nissan is providing six all-electric "Leaf" vehicles and three charging stations free of charge to the City of New York and taxi owners. The company envisions introducing electric vehicles as Yellow Cabs in the future.

The unveiling event for the new Yellow Cab was held prior to the opening of the "2012 New York International Auto Show" on April 6th. The NV200 will be on display at the auto show venue from the 6th to the 15th, making its debut to international visitors. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were present at the event. Mayor Bloomberg expressed his joy in completing this monumental project, stating:

CEO Carlos Ghosn
"The NV200 is a completely new type of taxi, developed based on Nissan's global experience in commercial vehicles and incorporating various requests from New York City taxi drivers and passengers. It will bring an unprecedented level of innovation and comfort to the 600,000 people who use taxis every day."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg
"The NV200 is the safest, most comfortable, and most convenient taxi ever. The Yellow Cab has always been an indispensable part of New York City, and this NV200 will bring a fresh new perspective to it."

The new Yellow Cab, with its completely redesigned exterior and interior, is truly a next-generation taxi that combines comfort, convenience, and safety. We eagerly await the day, about a year and a half from now, when it will gracefully navigate the streets of New York.
