What is the Future of Next-Generation Hybrids?
Toyota's highlight is the hybrid concept model named "FT-Bh." The name stands for "Future Toyota B-segment hybrid," and as the name suggests, it is sized for the B-segment, where Toyota's Vitz is positioned.
The key feature is the combination of a 1-liter, two-cylinder engine with a hybrid system. The result is an astonishing fuel economy of 47.6 km/L.
Beyond the hybrid system, there's much to admire, including lightweight technology that keeps the vehicle weight under 800kg and a heating system that utilizes engine exhaust heat. However, as a Japanese observer, I felt this, but the attention it garnered at the venue was surprisingly low. I imagine thatVolkswagen Polo BlueGTin a market where fuel-efficient, high-performance models are becoming a reality, this concept might be perceived as just a pipe dream.
During the press conference, Didier Leroy, CEO of Toyota Europe, actively promoted their track record of selling over 400,000 hybrid vehicles in Europe. However, with the emergence of gasoline cars that rival hybrids in highway fuel efficiency, differentiating solely on hybrid technology may prove challenging.
The Highly Anticipated GT86
On the other hand, the GT86, which has generated much buzz in Japan (Toyota 86in Europe) was also drawing considerable attention in Geneva. Its concept as a lightweight, compact, sporty rear-wheel-drive vehicle was indeed distinctive amidst the displays. This suggests a different stance towards cars compared to the Japanese market, where the focus shifts rapidly to fuel efficiency and hybrids.
Lexus announced a minor model change for the Lexus RX.Lexus GSThe spindle grille, first introduced on the new GS, has now been adopted by the RX. It integrates seamlessly, not appearing as an afterthought. It fits quite well.
