Achieving Low Fuel Consumption and Low CO2 Emissions Through Various Approaches
The "FT-Bh" is named from "Future Toyota - B-segment Hybrid." It is a small hybrid concept car in the B-segment, developed with the latter half of the 2010s in mind, when hybrid cars are expected to become even more widespread. It offers not only high environmental performance but also excellent responsiveness and agile handling.
The boldly designed body is compact, measuring 3,985mm in length, 1,695mm in width, and 1,400mm in height, yet it provides comfortable seating for four adults. The result of meticulous aerodynamic refinement is an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.235. Furthermore, as it is envisioned as a mass-produced, fuel-efficient vehicle, the body utilizes high-tensile steel sheets, which are common in commercially available cars. Thanks to lightweight, highly foamed materials used for cabin temperature management, it achieves an extremely light curb weight of 786kg without relying on expensive materials like carbon fiber.
The powertrain features a newly developed 1-liter, two-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine with a long stroke. Combined with improved hybrid system efficiency, it achieves a fuel consumption of 2.1ℓ/100km and CO2 emissions of 49g/km under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), which is less than half the average CO2 emissions of current B-segment cars.
Future developments are also envisioned to include specifications for compressed natural gas (CNG) and plug-in hybrid variants.
At the Geneva Motor Show, which runs until March 18 (Sunday), Toyota Motor Corporation also showcased four other vehicles: the next-generation four-door concept "TOYOTA NS4," making its European debut; the sedan-type next-generation fuel cell vehicle concept "FCV-R"; and the concept cars "TOYOTA diji (Japanese name Fun-Vii)" and "GT-86." Additionally, the "Yaris Hybrid" and "Prius Plug-in Hybrid," which are nearing commercial release in Europe, were also on display.
