Test drive of the new Range Rover—a truly world-class luxury SUV | Land Rover
Initially, Only 4.4-liter V8 and 3-liter Diesel Models Will Be Introduced
In Napa Valley, I was able to drive the "P530" equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 engine and the "MHEV D300" with a 3-liter inline-6 diesel engine. The latter is a mild-hybrid system that uses an electric motor during startup to reduce CO2 emissions.

Interestingly, the character of the engines differs quite significantly.
The 4.4-liter V8 engine boasts a maximum output of 390 kW (530 ps) and a peak torque of 750 Nm. Power is abundant from very low RPMs, allowing for powerful acceleration at all times without needing to press the accelerator pedal hard. According to the manufacturer, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds—comparable to a sports car.
What is striking when driving the Range Rover is the body's movement. This is partly due to the suspension being deliberately set to a softer side. Those accustomed to high-performance German SUVs might initially find it disorienting. However, the plush ride is quickly adaptable, and once accustomed, it feels exceptionally pleasant.
It is perfectly suited for cruising through the rolling hills with gentle curves around Napa Valley. In Japan, many interested in the Range Rover reportedly choose the V8 model. It is unlikely to be the wrong choice.

Meanwhile, the 3-liter inline-6 diesel is another key offering in Japan. This engine, with a maximum output of 221 kW (300 ps) and a peak torque of 650 Nm, is also very well-executed.
Thanks to the mild-hybrid system, the initial acceleration is remarkably smooth. Following that, the smooth rotational characteristics allow for enjoyable acceleration, making it hard to believe it's a diesel. There is no noticeable noise.
Another advantage of the diesel-powered "D300 MHEV" is its handling. With a lighter front end, its movements are more agile. When cornering, it responds nimbly to the left and right, following the driver's intentions precisely, and the matching with the suspension settings is excellent.
When test driving overseas, one can sometimes get carried away and find everything impressive. However, the new Range Rover is a car that grows on you the more you drive it, so I am confident it will satisfy many expectations in Japan as well.
As detailed above, the new Range Rover, with its powerful performance and abundant comfort features, can be considered the world's most luxurious SUV. In Japan, due to global parts supply shortages, only the following models will be introduced for the time being. Models with inline-6 gasoline engines will not be sold.
