Test Drive of the New Range Rover
The Land Rover "Range Rover," fully redesigned for the first time in nine years, was introduced to Japan in January 2022. Motor journalist Fumio Ogawa, who attended the international test drive event in Napa Valley, California, USA, experienced its craftsmanship firsthand.

The First Three-Row Seating in Range Rover History
The "Range Rover," a pioneer in luxury SUVs, has undergone a full model change. Announced in Japan in January 2022, it has since captured my keen interest. I had the opportunity to test drive the new model in late April, in the Napa Valley region of Northern California.

One of the key features of the fifth-generation Range Rover is the availability of both standard and long-wheelbase versions, with the latter offering three-row seating for the first time in the model's history.
Another notable aspect is the enhanced equipment for driving performance.
The powertrain options are abundant, including plug-in hybrid, V8, inline-6, and diesel. Furthermore, it boasts numerous technological features such as integrated control of body roll and ride comfort using electronic air suspension, and rear-wheel steering for improved maneuverability in tight spaces.

Furthermore, I felt that the interior, designed to meet the demands of many customers seeking "refinement and luxury," is spacious, exceptionally quiet, offers versatile seating arrangements, and boasts a unique aesthetic in its color palette and material choices.
"Reducing elements to their essence was the design theme," said Gerry McGovern, Chief Creative Officer. True to his words, the smooth finish of the body surface is superb. With virtually no protrusions, it is, in essence, thoroughly simple, yet it possesses a distinct character.
What impressed me was the attention to proportion. Both the "Standard Wheelbase" with a body length of 5,052mm and a wheelbase of 2,997mm, and the "Long Wheelbase" with dimensions of 5,252mm and 3,197mm, are beautifully balanced.
"The Long Wheelbase also offers a 7-seater option with three rows of seats, requiring considerations such as extending the roof length. However, through thorough discussion and verification between the engineering and design departments, we achieved perfect packaging and style for both the standard and long versions, ensuring neither compromises on balance,"
David Steele, Marketing Director, proudly explained at the test drive venue.

What is also impressive is the interior. The driver's area, as McGovern described, reflects a conscious effort towards "reduction." The elements are well-organized, with the functions necessary for driving and the infotainment system for passengers clearly separated from a design perspective, making it easy to use for both the driver and passengers.
The 13.1-inch monitor screen for the infotainment system is positioned lower down, considering the line of sight. For the driver, this certainly made it easier to glance at while driving.
