Test Drive of the BMW M140i
The M140i is the sportiest model in BMW's compact hatchback "1 Series" lineup. It's the first compact car to bear the M name, but now with the "M240i" coupe and even more extreme modelsM2being introduced, Fumio Ogawa reconfirms its position after a test drive.

The M140i's Unique Strengths
BMW's cars are defined by their engines. While that's a bold statement, it's undeniable that they offer a lineup of vehicles where engines can be truly "enjoyed." This is the essence of BMW's appeal.
What does it mean to enjoy an engine? The M140i provides the answer. It's a model that packs an inline-six engine into a relatively compact body. In the parlance of a bygone trend, it's a quintessential hot hatch.
The M140i carries a slightly different designation than typical BMWs. This is because it's defined as an "M Performance Automobile."
M Performance Automobiles are special BMW vehicles. Their powertrains and chassis receive sporty tuning from BMW M GmbH, the division responsible for high-performance model development. Additionally, they feature "emotional, exclusive design" (BMW).

Fuel economy (JC08 mode) is 13.4 km/liter, an improvement of about 10 percent over the previous model.
A slight press of the accelerator pedal sends the car leaping forward, and as you continue to depress it, the engine spins with astonishing smoothness. The scenery outside the windows recedes at an incredible pace.
The exhilarating feeling of acceleration and the surge of power as the revs climb. It's a perfect example of a well-engineered gasoline engine. In an era of increasing electric vehicles, one might wonder if this is a final flourish, but it's gratifying to know that the spirit of classic BMWs is still alive.
The M140i is based on the "1 Series," a hatchback body measuring around 4,340mm in length. Models like the "180d" with a diesel engine, added in 2016, offer an excellent balance of fuel efficiency and power, resulting in a highly commendable vehicle.
Conversely, if we were to use the word "balance" for the M140i, it would refer to the high level of both its engine performance and handling. Another way to describe its appeal would be the abundance of powerful enjoyment it offers.
The same powertrain is also used in the aforementioned "M2." The difference between the M2 and M140i lies in their drivetrains: the M140i uses a torque converter automatic, while the M2 employs a dual-clutch transmission. A manual gearbox is available for both models.
The M140i possesses distinct merits that are uniquely its own.

Fulfilling Expectations of BMW's Character
Compared to the circuit-focused BMW M2, what are the M140i's unique characteristics? Indeed, the differences in chassis construction and other aspects are quite significant compared to the M2.
The M140i's appeal lies in its price difference compared to the M2. While the M2 costs 7.68 million yen, the M140i is priced at 5.78 million yen. If the primary goal is to enjoy the smooth and powerful six-cylinder engine, I believe the M140i's raison d'être is here. Of course, the M2 is a coupe, so its style is different.
The new-generation 3-liter inline-six engine produces a maximum output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a peak torque of 500 Nm. The figures clearly indicate considerable power for its compact body.
Driving the M140i brings back memories of why I've always been drawn to BMW. The inline-six engine, revving to the redline with a crisp, dry sound, and the responsiveness when turning the steering wheel – it's quintessentially BMW, I'm impressed.
I believe BMW's appeal lies in its technology for skillfully controlling significant power. MINI, part of the same group, is known for its "go-kart feeling," where the car corners without body roll when the steering wheel is turned.
BMWs (excluding M models) are more mature. There's a pleasant, gradual body roll when steering, which defines their character.
Similarly, the M140i gives the impression of a solid connection between the thicker-grip steering wheel and the chassis, thanks to its impressive rigidity. One might even feel a sense of unity between the driver and the vehicle.

BMW defines M Performance Automobiles as models positioned between BMW M models and BMW's top-end models.
The precise steering allows you to maintain your intended line, a true pleasure of driving. BMW cars are favored for their engine feel and chassis control, and the M140i does not disappoint.
The car's concept leans more towards a GT-like character than a hardcore sports model. Consequently, it's comfortable even at high speeds. The suspension is supple, with minimal jarring from the road surface.
The inline-six engine responds sensitively to the slightest movement of the foot on the accelerator, modulating torque for delicate acceleration and deceleration. This feel can be fully appreciated at high speeds. It's truly remarkable.

Balancing Sportiness with Mature Luxury
The M140i is the successor to the previous "M135i." Its key feature is a 10 kW (14 hp) increase in maximum output and a 50 Nm boost in maximum torque compared to its predecessor.
The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is officially stated at 4.6 seconds, and judging by the driving experience, this is likely an accurate figure.
Meanwhile, the ambiance is also excellent. The exterior boasts a commanding presence with enlarged air dams at the front. The slightly lowered ride height further accentuates its sporty character. Yet, it also offers a sense of luxury, with comfortable leather seats.
For instance, the interior of the test model features striking red leather seats. It's clear that a thorough commitment to the car's overall concept, including the interior, is paramount.
Japanese car manufacturers have become adept at crafting sporty interiors. One hopes they will soon produce compact cars like the M140i that achieve a balance of sportiness and mature luxury. This car inspires such thoughts.
The BMW 1 Series is a rare existence: a compact car that retains the advantages of rear-wheel drive. The M140i, representing one extreme of this lineup, is a versatile athlete suitable for any occasion, making it a worthwhile companion.
