V40 Becomes a Hatchback

The new V40, for which limited information has been released, is described as a "modern luxury car" and is said to be a premium hatchback model that blends design, safety, and usability, reflecting market feedback. From the first generation, which appeared in 1995 as a station wagon model of the sedan S40, to the second generation released in 2004 and renamed the V50, the new V40, now transformed into a hatchback, will see rivals such as the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 Sportback.

The ergonomically designed cockpit is arranged to provide necessary information to the driver without burden, allowing them to focus on driving while remaining relaxed. It also appears to be equipped with safety features such as a pedestrian detection system, auto brake, parking assist, lane keeping function, and a pedestrian airbag.

Highlighting Environmental Performance

In conjunction with the V40's exhibition at the show, Volvo is emphasizing its excellent fuel economy. While a gasoline engine grade called "T5" will be available, producing a maximum output of 254ps and achieving 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds, the focus is rather on the "D2" diesel engine grade, which aligns with the trend of high efficiency through downsizing. It achieves fuel consumption of 3.6ℓ/100km and CO2 emissions below 100g/km, specifically 94g/100km.

By spring, the C30 will have equivalent CO2 emissions, and the S40 and V50, equipped with the same engine, will achieve 99g/km of CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, in the latter half of 2012,V60a plug-in hybrid version will also be released. Volvo proudly presents this as a new dimension in hybrid vehicles, achieving fuel consumption of 1.9ℓ/100km, CO2 emissions of 49g/km, and EV driving up to 50km. It combines a diesel engine with a maximum output of 215ps and a 70ps motor, generating a combined torque of up to 440+200Nm.

In 2013, VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture) engines, which are four-cylinder units, will also be introduced. Available in both diesel and gasoline variants, they can accommodate a range from high-power to high-efficiency models and can be flexibly combined with advanced technologies, including hybrids.
