The Maison's Confidence, Revealed in Clear Design

The appeal of a moon phase model lies not only in its practicality but also in its romantic allure. Representing the lunar cycle on the dial evokes the grandeur of horological history and celestial motion.

Yet, housing this within a wristwatch, a small case, while simultaneously integrating time and calendar functions requires exceptional technical skill and aesthetic sensibility. The Saxonia Annual Calendar, through the Maison's craftsmanship, is a new watch that excels in both aspects.

The commitment to legibility is evident in the dial's layout. The most crucial information—time and date—can be read at a glance. A sub-dial at 9 o'clock displays the day of the week, while its counterpart on the right shows the month. Within the space framed by the small seconds at 6 o'clock, a moon phase is positioned, with the moon gently traversing against a backdrop of a starry night sky.

The moon disc is crafted from 750 gold and coated in a deep blue, offering a view that resembles a miniature Milky Way with 428 stars.

The dial's beauty is supported by numerous carefully and meticulously incorporated details. Delicate minute markers, baton-shaped applied indices, and prominent lancet-shaped hands accentuate the elegant appearance.

Furthermore, the outer ring of the sub-dials features a delicate *azurage* decoration, with a different decorative pattern applied to the inner surface using the same technique. This reflects light, adding depth and dimension to the dial. The renewed baton-shaped applied indices have been given a shape reminiscent of a pyramid at their outer tips.

The calendar mechanism also incorporates Lange's characteristic practical ingenuity. The annual calendar automatically distinguishes between months with 30 and 31 days, accurately transitioning from the end of one month to the beginning of the next. Manual adjustment is only required once a year, when transitioning from February 28th (or 29th in a leap year) to March 1st.

Operability has also been considered. Each display—day, month, and moon phase—can be adjusted with individual pushers. Additionally, a pusher at 10 o'clock allows for the advancement of all displays simultaneously.

The case measures a discreet 36.0 mm in diameter and 9.8 mm in thickness. Its proportions ensure a natural fit on the wrist and a sleek profile under a shirt cuff. The refined lugs and slim bezel contribute to an understated yet sophisticated presence.

The combination of compact size and intricate details is achieved through the newly developed in-house automatic movement, Caliber L207.1. It features a unidirectional winding central rotor made of 950 platinum and a classic Glashütte stopwork balance with a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The power reserve when fully wound is up to 60 hours.

In line with Lange's philosophy, the movement's finishing involves a luxurious treatment after a process of double assembly for all components. Through the sapphire crystal case back, one can glimpse the traditions of precision watchmaking originating from the Saxon royal court of the 19th century, including hand-engraved balance cocks and delicate surface polishing.

Traditional elements such as screw-mounted gold chatons are also preserved, embodying the historical spirit that the name "Saxonia" signifies.

Despite its complex mechanism, the exterior remains serene and simple. This duality is a testament to the technical prowess and aesthetic sensibility that A. Lange & Söhne has cultivated over its 181-year history, and a clear expression of its unwavering confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions about A. Lange & Söhne Watches

Q. What kind of brand is A. Lange & Söhne?

The brand's origins trace back to 1845 when watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange settled in Glashütte, having moved from Dresden, and established his watchmaking workshop. After Adolf's death, his two sons succeeded him, expanding the manufacturing scale, and in 1868, the brand name "A. Lange & Söhne" was born. Later, the company was nationalized in East Germany due to the division of Germany after World War II. However, with the reunification of Germany, great-grandson Walter Lange returned to Glashütte and revived the brand. Within just four years, multiple models such as the "Lange 1" and "Saxonia" were introduced. Today, it is counted among the world's five great luxury watch Maisons, alongside Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, and Breguet.

Q. What is an annual calendar mechanism?

It is a complex mechanism known for its high practicality among calendar mechanisms. An annual calendar automatically and accurately distinguishes between months with 30 and 31 days, correctly switching the date. Manual adjustment is only required once a year, when transitioning from February 28th (or 29th in a leap year) to March 1st. In this model, the day, month, and moon phase displays can be adjusted with individual pushers, and all displays can be advanced simultaneously by operating the pusher at 10 o'clock.
