Geometric design meets a powerful black finish. The "TAG Heuer Monaco Special Edition," dedicated to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.
Swiss luxury watchmaker TAG Heuer has unveiled the "TAG Heuer Monaco Special Edition," a timepiece designed to thrill motorsport enthusiasts and lovers of bold, innovative watches. Inspired by the popular Monaco from the 1970s, this special chronograph features a titanium case with DLC coating, embodying the collection's daring spirit of innovation.
A limited edition featuring titanium with black coating for the first time.
Since its launch in 1969, the TAG Heuer "Monaco Chronograph" has challenged every aspect of watchmaking with its bold innovation. In an era when only manual-winding chronographs existed, the Monaco emerged as one of the first automatic chronographs.
The Monaco of that era eschewed traditional black or white dials, opting instead for a vibrant blue, further enhanced by bright white registers and red accents. However, the most revolutionary aspect of the Monaco was its form. It masterfully broke from the tradition of nearly all chronographs being round, adopting the first square waterproof case. Furthermore, the name "Monaco" itself captured the watch's duality, reflecting the unparalleled luxury of the Principality of Monaco in stark contrast to the dangerous atmosphere of the legendary F1 race.
More than 50 years after the Monaco's debut, TAG Heuer has added a special edition to this legendary series. This new model is characterized by its Grade 2 titanium case with a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating. Titanium, a high-performance, corrosion-resistant material that uniquely combines strength and lightness, is enhanced by the DLC coating to achieve the durability required for a racing tool and a deep, rich color. The case also undergoes sandblasting for a grained finish. Moreover, advancements in coating technology have resulted in a durable black finish not only on the case but also on the crown, pushers, and case back. The hands are coated with Super-LumiNova®, ensuring optimal legibility in any condition, day or night.
The dial is completely reimagined with the Monaco's signature "circle within a square" geometric shape, composed of two parts with contrasting finishes. The central circle of the dial features a satin finish achieved through circular brushing, reflecting the speed and smoothness of motorsport. In contrast, the outer part of the dial has a grained finish from sandblasting, representing the grip of tires on the circuit, creating a dramatic contrast and leading to a design where the dial and case appear to merge seamlessly. The chronograph registers are finished in black opaline, providing a perfect backdrop for the deep red hands of the chronograph.
The in-house Calibre Heuer 02 movement powering this piece presents a distinct contrast to the movement found in the original 1970s Monaco Chronograph. This movement features the traditional column wheel that powers the chronograph, and its beautiful finishing, including a rotor decorated with rose gold plating, can be admired through the sapphire case back.
