A new model, the TAG Heuer Carrera Tourbillon Chronograph x Porsche Panamericana, has arrived to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Porsche's first victory in the Carrera Panamericana México race. This is an exclusive timepiece, limited to 255 pieces.
70 Years Since Porsche's First Victory: An Achievement Embodied in a Watch
The Carrera Panamericana México, which began in 1950, gained renown as a grueling cross-country rally. This race spanned over 3,000 kilometers from northern to southern Mexico, with average speeds exceeding 150 km/h, presenting an extreme trial for both drivers and machines. Although it was ultimately canceled after only five editions due to safety concerns, it left a brilliant mark on motorsport history.
For Porsche, the class victory achieved by Hans Herrmann in the Porsche 550 Spyder under harsh conditions in 1954 solidified the marque's standing in endurance racing.
Furthermore, it was Jack Heuer's hearing about the Carrera Panamericana México in 1962 that led to the creation of the Heuer Carrera chronograph. Introduced in 1963, the first Heuer Carrera Chronograph was highly acclaimed as a groundbreaking watch that merged design and functionality. In 2023, it celebrated its 60th anniversary, firmly establishing its position as a flagship model for the maison.
The newly released TAG Heuer Carrera Tourbillon Chronograph x Porsche Panamericana commemorates the 70th anniversary of Porsche's first victory in the Carrera Panamericana México.
The design draws inspiration from the Porsche 550 Spyder, with its open-worked dial mimicking its wheels. The color scheme reflects the original racing car, while yellow hands and sub-dials add a sporty flair. The dial features a glossy finish reminiscent of the 550 Spyder's body, alongside a textured, asphalt-like surface.
The watch case measures 42mm and is crafted from stainless steel with alternating satin and polished finishes. It is engraved with "Spyder" in the original 1950s Porsche font, and the PORSCHE logo is printed on the flange. The name "PANAMERICANA" is inscribed above the tourbillon, and a domed sapphire crystal enhances legibility.
The movement housed within the case is the in-house Caliber TH20-09, featuring a tourbillon. As with all previous TAG Heuer x Porsche models, the rotor, designed to resemble a Porsche steering wheel, is visible through the sapphire case back. The strap is made of black calfskin, with yellow lining and stitching that enhance the motorsport aesthetic.
The limited edition is set at 255 pieces, a number inspired by "55," the car number of the Porsche 550 Spyder that won the 1954 Carrera Panamericana México. The case back is engraved with the serial number and "LIMITED EDITION." The special packaging consists of a luxurious black lacquer finished wooden box, complementing the watch itself.
This piece, a tribute to the history and passion of both brands, reinterprets the past through modern design. The intricate details and refined finish, born from a strong connection, embody the unique dedication of TAG Heuer and Porsche.
