The Original Chronograph 1 Reimagined by Hodinkee
Porsche Design has announced the "Chronograph 1 – Hodinkee 2024 Edition," a limited collaboration with the global watch media outlet "Hodinkee," with only 350 pieces worldwide. A launch event was also held in Tokyo, where 150 units will be sold in Japan.
Days of the Week Displayed in Japanese and English, Along with the Limited Edition Number
Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who designed Porsche's icon, the "911," established the luxury lifestyle brand "Porsche Design" in 1972 with a vision to spread Porsche's philosophy and mythos beyond the automotive industry. In the same year, the "Chronograph 1," designed by him, was born.
At the time, unlike the common silver or gold watches, this completely black timepiece, derived from automotive design and functionality like a "911" cockpit, reportedly caused quite a stir upon its release.
Stefan Buescher, CEO of Porsche Lifestyle Group, who visited Japan for the launch event, commented, "The Chronograph 1 stands today as a timeless masterpiece. We are extremely honored to co-create this special Chronograph 1 edition with the watch enthusiasts at Hodinkee."
Furthermore, it was announced that the collaboration with Hodinkee will be a trilogy, with two more models to be released at a pace of one per year over the next two years.
So why will 150 of the 350 limited edition "Chronograph 1 – Hodinkee 2024 Edition" units be sold in Japan? This is related to the fact that Japan possesses a large number of Porsche's most rare and valuable sports cars.
Classic car events are held in Japan, captivating many enthusiasts. High regard is also placed on luxury watches, and Hodinkee published its first sister publication in Japan.
This connection with Japan is reflected in the watch itself, with the mechanical day display on the "Chronograph 1 – Hodinkee 2024 Edition" shown in two languages: English and Japanese.
The watch fuses timeless design, embodying the spirit of the 1970s, with cutting-edge technology. The case is made of durable and lightweight titanium, coated in black with scratch-resistant titanium carbide.
The sealed case back is engraved with the Porsche Design logo and the limited edition number.
On the dial, the hour and minute hands, along with the hour markers, use a special Super-LumiNova® luminous coating for legibility in the dark, mimicking the vintage appearance. A tachymeter scale features a "1 mile" graphic inspired by Hodinkee's home country, the United States, and the letter "H" is placed at the 6 o'clock position.
The "Chronograph 1 – Hodinkee 2024 Edition" will be available for purchase in Japan at Isetan Mitsukoshi and department store watch salons, as well as through order at Porsche Centers nationwide.
