Introducing Seiko's First Mechanical Divers Watch with GMT Function
Seiko Watch Corporation will release two regular models and one limited edition model equipped with a newly developed mechanical GMT movement, a first for its Prospex divers watch line, on Friday, June 9, 2023.
A Limited Edition to Commemorate Seiko's 110th Anniversary
Three years after releasing Japan's first divers watch, Seiko introduced a model in 1968 that achieved 300m water resistance with a monocoque case and a high-beat movement oscillating at 10 vibrations per second, then the world's highest standard. Since then, Seiko has continued to deliver numerous products incorporating unique technologies. The company has pursued the potential of divers watches, achieving safety and reliability that withstand extreme environmental conditions, earning high praise and trust from professional divers and adventurers worldwide.
It was recently announced that a divers watch, updated in specifications and design to befit a premium sports watch and based on the historical model released in 1968, will be launched this June.
The new mechanical caliber "6R54" is a newly developed movement that enables a long power reserve of three days (approximately 72 hours) while also featuring a GMT function. The GMT hand (24-hour hand) can be adjusted independently, allowing for easy changes to the second time zone while keeping the home time unchanged.
Furthermore, it features a rotating bezel insert made of lustrous ceramic, which is highly resistant to scratches. The unidirectional rotating bezel combines excellent operability with refined form, harmonizing with the solid, low-profile case to create a beautiful silhouette. The newly developed bracelet has a slim shape that fits the wrist, providing a comfortable wearing experience.
In addition to the regular models, a limited edition model will also be released to commemorate the 110th anniversary of Seiko's first domestically produced wristwatch.
This model joins the Save the Ocean series, symbolizing Prospex's commitment to supporting ocean conservation with gratitude for the vast sea. It expresses the magnificent scenery of the polar regions, where Seiko divers watches have built their reputation, with a gray ceramic bezel and an ice-blue dial featuring a three-dimensional patterned finish.
The included interchangeable fabric strap, inspired by the beautiful glacial formations, features a rich, three-dimensional woven pattern created by combining multiple colored threads. Made from 100% recycled PET bottles with consideration for the environment, it is woven using a traditional Japanese technique called "Seichu." This weaving method meets the rigorous standards of Seiko divers watches, ensuring durability for prolonged use in demanding environments.
The price for the modern design model is 209,000 yen, and the 110th-anniversary limited edition model is 231,000 yen. Both are scheduled for release on Friday, June 9.
