What is a "Sector Dial"?

Founded in Ginza in 1971,Shellmanhas introduced numerous historical masterpieces (antique watches) and emerging watchmakers to a wide range of generations. Now, Shellman is releasing sector dial models, exclusive to Japan, from two independent brands for which it serves as an authorized distributor: "Habring2" and "KUDOKE."

1930s Antique (Reference)

The sector dial is a dial design that is highly acclaimed worldwide for its beauty and rarity. Although manufactured only for a short period in the 1930s, its rhythmic design, characterized by circular and radial lines representative of Art Deco, has been adopted by various brands on square and round dials, and can also be seen on chronographs, making it highly popular among antique watch enthusiasts.

At Shellman, to revive such past masterpieces for the modern era, they commissioned two independent watchmakers to create sector dial models. One is Mr. Richard Habring of Habring2, an authentic Austrian mechanical watch brand that excels in creating designs and special mechanisms that are independent of trends. The other is Mr. Stefan Kudoke of KUDOKE, who is both a watchmaker and an engraver.

By having these two young independent watchmakers, who honed their skills at major brands and embody their ideal of watchmaking, tackle the common theme of the sector dial, two "sector dial" models were born, transcending design boundaries and reflecting their individual careers and skills.

The Most Beautiful Watch Size is 36mm

Richard Habring of Habring2 focused on the overall design balance and case size. By pairing thick, three-dimensional blued steel hands reminiscent of the 1930s masterpieces with a 36mm case, which is on the smaller side for modern watches, he accentuated the delicate dial design with a sense of condensed presence.

The inclusion of a jumping seconds mechanism, where the seconds hand advances every second, is a sophisticated touch characteristic of Habring2, a brand known for its special mechanisms. This is the Jumping Seconds Sector Dial, born from the aesthetic sensibility and high technical skill of Richard Habring, who is deeply knowledgeable about antique watches.

Sector Dial Expressed Through Engraving

Stefan Kudoke, who is both a watchmaker and an engraver, expressed the rhythmic sector dial design, formed by circular and radial lines, through his signature bas-relief technique. Similar to KUDOKE's popular "Skull" model, this is achieved by directly engraving the silver dial plate based on a sketch, using a microscope for each piece. The result is a dial with a unique texture and captivating presence, characteristic of handcrafted work.

Kudoke's sector dial, where no two are exactly alike, can be considered a work of art. In addition to the dial's hands, the blued screws on the barrel and train wheels, along with the finely engraved, beautiful movement, are also noteworthy.
