Pursuit of Utmost Usability Yields a Luxurious Movement
In 2016, celebrating its 261st year, Vacheron Constantin unveiled an evolved "Overseas" collection, showcasing a blend of casual elegance and practicality that surpassed previous iterations.
A distinctive feature of the Overseas bezel is its motif inspired by the Maltese cross, the brand's identity. The Maltese cross is known as the symbol of the Knights Hospitaller, a Christian military order, with its eight points said to represent the eight virtues of chivalry.

However, Vacheron Constantin's adoption of this shape was inspired by the form of a part once attached to the cover of a barrel, rather than any religious background. Registered with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property in Bern, Switzerland, in 1880, it has remained the company's symbol for approximately 140 years.
While the Maltese cross motif has been incorporated into various models over time, no other collection so strongly embodies this icon as the Overseas. In that sense, it can be considered the collection that most concretely represents the brand's identity.
Launched concurrently with the new collection is the "Overseas Extra-flat Perpetual Calendar." This model is powered by Caliber 1120 QP/1, a movement that functions as a mechanical computer, accurately displaying time, date, day, month, leap year, and moon phase until the year 2100.

Thinning complex movements is a challenge for any watchmaker, yet Vacheron Constantin has masterfully overcome this hurdle, creating a movement just 4.05mm thick. Remarkably, it also incorporates an automatic winding mechanism.
Typically, to add a specific complication (let's call it A) to a watch, a module equipped with complication A is stacked onto a base movement. This is because it's less costly and faster to produce than creating a movement from scratch. However, this stacking approach increases wasted space, resulting in a thicker watch.
Vacheron Constantin, however, eschews this path. They meticulously craft a thin, automatic movement with a perpetual calendar complication from the ground up. This approach ensures superior wearing comfort, eliminates the need for manual winding, and provides constant access to essential information, making it exceptionally user-friendly.
The creation of Caliber 1120 QP/1 has enabled the realization of a case thickness of 8.1mm, befitting the "Extra-flat" designation. No other perpetual calendar model offers such a refined fit. Currently, this movement is exclusively found in the Overseas and Patrimony lines. Naturally, it can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back. The 22K gold rotor is adorned with a compass rose, a fitting detail for the Overseas collection.
While dedicating a bespoke movement to a select few models might seem extravagant, it is precisely this dedication that embodies Vacheron Constantin's pride, expertise, and unique appeal.
This year, the "Overseas Extra-flat Perpetual Calendar" welcomes a new blue-dialed variant. Its combination with a pink gold case is both refined and bold, harmonizing beautifully with the Maltese cross motif. This model represents a further evolution in the interpretation of the Overseas' core concept of casual elegance.
