Richard Mille RM017 Ultra-Thin Tourbillon
A Tourbillon Movement in a Case Just 8.7mm Thick
By Yasuto Shibuya
This new model, released in 2008, features a newly developed movement with a tourbillon mechanism housed within the case of the brand's first rectangular model, the "RM016." This "ultra-thin engine," fitting into a mere 8.7mm thickness, utilizes carbon nanofibers—a material researched and developed for fields such as aerospace and electronics due to its excellent rigidity and electrical properties—for its baseplate. Furthermore, the semi-skeletonized dial offers a view of the tourbillon carriage and barrel, with a bold and powerful design reminiscent of contemporary avant-garde architecture.
Manual winding, 49.8 x 38mm white gold case, alligator strap, 42 million yen (estimated retail price), scheduled for release in 2011.
BRAND HISTORY
With a concept of "Formula 1 of watchmaking," Richard Mille is a highly distinctive brand that relentlessly pursues the adoption of "only the highest functions and quality achievable at present." Its abundant originality can be immediately felt upon encountering one of their timepieces.
Following its shocking debut in the watchmaking world with the "RM001" in 2001, the brand has successively devised unique mechanisms such as the V-shaped tourbillon bridge and the "variable inertia moment rotor," which adjusts winding efficiency based on wrist movement. All models are meticulously hollowed out to the minimum, pursuing extreme lightness through the use of special materials like titanium and carbon.
One model, employing "Arcalum," a new material also used in artificial satellites, achieved an unbelievable total weight of less than 30 grams despite being a metal alloy. Moreover, its high durability, designed for hard use, is also a characteristic, creating luxury watches on an entirely different level than ever before.
The brand also actively engages in cross-industry collaborations, such as presenting a model created in partnership with renowned designer Philippe Starck at a charity auction. In 2007, two new models were unveiled, boasting the thinnest and thickest case sizes in their collection, which now spans from the "RM001" to the "RM016." The future trajectory of the genius Richard Mille's ideas is eagerly anticipated.
