A New Dual Time Model Packed with Innovative Technology!

By Yasuto Shibuya

This latest tourbillon model with a dual time function features a honeycomb-structured alloy as its baseplate, combining nanocarbon fiber—researched and developed by NASA for supersonic aircraft wings—with orthorhombic titanium aluminide. An evolution of the "RM021" announced in 2009, this model incorporates Richard Mille's signature thorough innovation, including a high-speed winding barrel, a free-sprung balance with variable inertia, and ceramic endstones for the tourbillon cage. The dual time mechanism can be easily set and adjusted with a push-button at 9 o'clock, and the crown incorporates a function selector mechanism that switches between winding, neutral, and time-setting with each push. It also features a power reserve indicator displaying the remaining spring tension and a torque indicator showing the mainspring's torque level.

Manual winding, 18k white gold case measuring 48 x 39.70 x 13.85mm, alligator strap, ¥43,575,000 (estimated retail price), scheduled for release within the year.

BRAND HISTORY

With the concept of "F1 in the watchmaking world," Richard Mille is a highly individualistic brand that relentlessly pursues the adoption of "only the highest functions and quality achievable at the present time." Its overflowing originality can be immediately felt upon encountering one of the company's timepieces.

After making a sensational debut in the watchmaking world with the "RM001" in 2001, the brand has successively devised unique mechanisms such as the V-shaped tourbillon bridge and the "variable inertia moment rotor" that adjusts winding efficiency based on wrist movement. All models are meticulously skeletonized to the minimum, pursuing ultimate lightness through the use of special materials like titanium and carbon.

One model, utilizing "Arkalys," a new material also used in artificial satellites, achieved an unbelievable total weight of less than 30g despite being a metal material. Furthermore, its high durability, designed for hard use, is also a characteristic, creating luxury watches on an entirely different dimension than before.

The brand also actively engages in cross-industry collaborations, such as presenting a collaborative model with top designer Philippe Starck at a charity auction. In 2007, two new models were released, boasting the thinnest and thickest case sizes respectively, and the collection, which began with the "RM001," now extends to the "RM016." The future trajectory of the genius Richard Mille's ideas is eagerly anticipated.
