With Details from a Bygone Era
A Classical & Elegant Manual-Wind Watch
Michel Herbelin, which crafts its watches in Charquemont, France, celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Charquemont is a watchmaking town in the French Jura Mountains, just a few kilometers from the Swiss border. It once housed over 30 watch manufacturers. Although the number has since dwindled to fewer than five, Charquemont remains France's representative watchmaking region, and Michel Herbelin continues to craft watches there, unchanged.

The Founding Family's Consistent Craftsmanship Leads to Authenticity
Michel Herbelin's business structure, where the founding family remains involved in watchmaking without selling the business, is highly commendable. The workshop employs approximately 70 people, many of whom are veterans who have dedicated their lives to watchmaking.
Guided by their aesthetic sensibilities, the brand presents the "Inspiration 1947" as its anniversary model. This timepiece, incorporating Art Deco designs popular in the 1920s and 30s while also evoking the relaxed spirit of the 1940s when wristwatches became widespread, conveys the atmosphere of that era as if it were an antique watch.
Wedge-shaped indices and dauphine hands. This design, utilizing the reflection of light, allows the dial to be read even in dim light without luminous material. While luminous materials existed in the 1940s, they were considered too crude for dress watches.
A silver dial with a sunray finish. Furthermore, the dial is domed. This is a technique to make the movement appear thinner. The date at 3 o'clock reflects a pragmatic approach. While a calendar is typically unnecessary for a dress watch, it is undeniably useful for everyday wear.
The crown is adorned with a blue stone. Officially, it's a sapphire cabochon. The presence or absence of this cabochon determines whether tradition is correctly inherited. It's no surprise that the French would not omit such exquisite details.
And then, the slender lugs contrasting with the voluminous case. This is a remnant of the era when pocket watches were adapted into wristwatches. The depiction of this historical context is a charming touch that will delight watch enthusiasts.
Even as an anniversary model, Michel Herbelin keeps the price accessible. To enhance the classic appeal of a suit, a dress watch is essential. The "Inspiration 1947," inheriting the lineage of such dress watches, is a detail-rich, high-value model.
