The "Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep" That Supported a Dive to the Earth's Deepest Point Announced at the British Museum in London

OMEGA has announced the "Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional," a watch that achieved the world's deepest dive record, at the British Museum in London. In May 2019, adventurer Victor Vescovo reached the deepest point of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean aboard the submersible "Limiting Factor," setting a world diving record of 10,928 meters. The watch was attached to the submersible's robotic arm and returned to the surface completely unharmed.

An Unprecedented Dive Watch That Accomplished a Descent to the Mariana Trench's Deepest Point

The "Five Deeps Expedition" was conducted from April to May 2019. Adventurer Victor Vescovo descended in the single-person submersible "Limiting Factor" to the deepest point of the Mariana Trench, identified through sonar seabed mapping, setting a world diving record of 10,928 meters.
Supporting this record-breaking dive was the "Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep." Two of the three watches were attached to the submersible's robotic arm, and another was mounted on a lander collecting data on the seabed. All successfully completed the dive and returned to the surface completely unscathed. The timepieces, which fulfilled their duty under the extreme water pressure at the Earth's deepest point, were unveiled at an event held at the British Museum in London. "These timepieces, which bring together a multitude of unique technologies, speak to OMEGA's watchmaking ingenuity," said OMEGA President and CEO, Raynald Aeschlimann. Adventurer Victor Vescovo, also present at the London event, praised OMEGA's project team, stating, "The ability to manufacture a perfect marine watch that is not only incredibly robust but also slim, lightweight, and stylish is remarkable."
For OMEGA, the manufacturing of professional diver's watches is a continuous endeavor, past and present. However, the development of the timepieces accompanying the "Five Deeps Expedition" required a completely different level of creativity and extensive, advanced engineering expertise. The bezel, case, case back, and crown were crafted from material cut from the hull of the "Limiting Factor" (certified by DNV-GL, a prestigious international maritime certification body), made of Grade 5 titanium. Liquidmetal® was used to securely and resiliently assemble the sapphire crystal and case. This innovative technology allowed for a reduced sapphire crystal thickness and achieved a surprisingly slim and light case thickness of under 28mm.
The special technologies and materials developed for the "Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep" are planned to be applied to future products for divers who enjoy scuba diving at more common depths.
