Among IWC's most popular models is the "Portuguese Chrono-Automatic." Debuting as the younger sibling to the "Portuguese Chrono-Rattrapante" introduced in 1995, it remains a remarkably long-lived bestseller with its fundamental design unchanged since its inception.
The Portuguese series itself originates from the highly accurate marine chronometers requested by Portuguese merchants from IWC in the 1930s. IWC impressively met their demands by fitting large pocket watch movements into wristwatches.
At the time, the resulting watches were an unprecedented 41mm in diameter. However, this large face is the very identity of the current Portuguese line, and the Portuguese Chrono-Automatic, in particular, adopts a 40.9mm diameter, remaining most faithful to the original size.
The "two-eye" layout of the chronograph, arranged vertically on the dial, chronographstyle also evokes a classical image, as if symbolizing the historical lineage of the Portuguese.
The embossed Arabic numerals offer a refined elegance, providing legibility without being overly assertive, while the tapered, swallow-shaped hands exude a sense of quality. This timeless, sophisticated design is likely the secret to its enduring popularity.
Since its debut, numerous dial colors and case materials have been introduced, and it is still possible to choose from six variations today.
Automatic winding. 28,800 vibrations per hour. 42-hour power reserve. Case diameter 40.9mm. Thickness 12.3mm. Crocodile strap. 6 bar water resistance. ¥782,250 (stainless steel case). ¥1,596,000 (18K RG case).
