The Spark That Ignited a Love for Watches: A Gift from His Wife

The "Nicolai Bergmann Flowers & Design Flagship Store" in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, is a familiar name to anyone who appreciates floral arrangements. On the second floor, in a spacious, glass-enclosed area where popular flower classes are held, Nicolai Bergmann gently gazes at the fresh blooms as if cherishing them. With deft hands, he swiftly demonstrated the creation of a self-standing bouquet right before our eyes.

A beautiful and delicate combination of colors. His creations, a fusion of the sensibilities of his native Denmark and Japan, are uniquely recognizable as Bergmann's work. Though the bouquet was only slightly larger than a soccer ball, its completion transformed the atmosphere of the space into one of serene elegance.

"I only started to really like watches about four or five years ago. It began when my wife gave me a watch with a black dial as a gift. Before that, I wore watches, of course, but I didn't have any particular feelings about them. But now, I feel 'naked' without one," says Bergmann.

A Value Beyond the Reach of an iPhone

Floral art, which involves working with living flowers, is a profession where a sense of time is indispensable. Currently, in addition to operating flower shops, flower schools, cafes, and interior/lifestyle stores, he also produces floral arrangements for hotel and event spaces, advertisements, and more.Improvised floral art in collaboration with live musical performancesHe is constantly challenging himself with diverse artistic possibilities, leading to an extremely busy schedule.

For Bergmann, a watch is not only an important tool for his work but also a special item that enriches his daily life.

"I can tell the time on my iPhone, of course. But a watch is a special item that cannot be compared to that. Every time I wear it, the memories we've shared come back. Trips, work, everyday life experiences. For me, a watch is a memory itself. I also believe it speaks to a person's status."

In addition to the black-dialed "Monaco Watch" his wife gifted him, he now favors the TAG Heuer "Grand Carrera RS Grand Date GMT" with a GMT function, which he is wearing today, and the "Koppel Chronograph Watch" from Georg Jensen, a brand from his native Denmark.

He wears the memorable Monaco Watch mainly for casual occasions. He seems particular about matching the colors of the dial and strap, such as pairing a black strap with a white dial, or a blue strap with a gray dial.

"I think I will keep and continue to wear the watches I own now for a long time. Watches are special, and not something you can easily buy. However, I will likely gradually acquire more watches to commemorate important milestones and special moments in my life. There are many other watches that catch my eye."

Bergmann, who is 36, is currently most interested in Hublot watches. He hopes to wear a Rolex when he turns 50. It is certain that more wonderful watches will be added to his collection, along with various memories.
