Portofino Series: Captivating New Models (1)

Held in Geneva in January 2015,SIHHIWC captured the attention of fans by boldly announcing the construction of a new factory and the advancement of new movement development, in addition to new product launches. At the 2014WATCHES & WONDERSprior to that announcement, IWC unveiled an entirely new "Portofino 37mm" collection, aimed squarely at women, for its world premiere. Then, in Hong Kong in 2015, IWC again presented new men's models in the "Portofino" collection, featuring entirely new movements. These include the maison's first monopoussoir chronograph and a day & date model. Both are hand-wound models with IWC's signature large case size and a long power reserve of approximately 8 days, making them unmissable for watch enthusiasts.

The Maison's First Monopoussoir Chronograph

The monopoussoir (single-button) type, where a push-button located in the center of the crown starts, stops, and resets the stopwatch mechanism, is the most classic mechanism among chronographs. However, surprisingly, IWC had not previously adopted this style for its wristwatches. At the 2015WATCHES & WONDERS, it was unveiled for the first time as a new addition to the "Portofino" collection.

The movement is an 8-day power reserve, a specialty of IWC. In addition to its classic and refined appearance, born from the skillful placement of indicators, the column wheel that controls the start, stop, and reset of the stopwatch mechanism stands out within the beautifully finished movement. This is the most classic and IWC-like masterpiece among the new watches announced at this year's WATCHES & WONDERS.

A Classic and Refined Big Date Model

The design of a big date model is perhaps one of the most challenging in watchmaking. The expression of the watch changes entirely depending on the size of the date numerals. The balance with the other elements on the dial is of utmost importance. Both too small and too large can look out of place. Especially with a big date, which has many display elements on the dial and uses separate discs for the tens and units digits, the numerals tend to become small due to structural constraints. This model now features a newly added day display at 3 o'clock, further enhancing its practicality.
