SHONAI HOTEL SUIDEN TERRASSE, the world's first hotel designed by Shigeru Ban, will grand open on Wednesday, September 19.
On Wednesday, September 19, 2018, SHONAI HOTEL SUIDEN TERRASSE, the world's first hotel designed by Shigeru Ban, will grand open in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture.
SUIDEN TERRASSE is an accommodation facility to be opened by Yamagata Design, a community development venture company in the Shonai region, under the design of architect Shigeru Ban, within a science park that is attracting attention as a model for regional revitalization with a growing number of bio-venture companies. All 143 guest rooms are wooden structures, built to gently float above the rice paddies that change their appearance with the seasons, creating a landscape in harmony with nature.
SUIDEN TERRASSE: A Wooden Hotel Floating on Rice Paddies
Designed by architect Shigeru Ban, "SUIDEN TERRASSE" is the world's first hotel designed by Mr. Ban.
Its appearance, as if floating on rice paddies, further accentuates its sophisticated exterior and seems to soothe the hearts of visitors.
The hotel's interior is characterized by simple beauty, not extravagance, with rooms that offer a warm, wooden ambiance.
The three buildings, named "GASSAN," "HAGURO," and "YUDONO" after the Dewa Sanzan mountains, house 143 rooms. There are four types of rooms: double and twin rooms, and suites offering ample space for relaxation, as well as group rooms for larger parties.
From the windows, guests can enjoy views of the original landscape of the Shonai Plain and the courtyard, offering picturesque scenery.
At the restaurant "MOON TERRASSE RESTAURANT," guests can savor the seasonal flavors of Shonai, featuring dishes that make abundant use of pesticide-free vegetables harvested from the hotel's own farm, emphasizing local production for local consumption and the quality of ingredients. In the open and airy space with an open-air terrace overlooking Mount Gassan, guests can enjoy their meals or relax in the evening with a selection of local sake at the bar.
The hotel shop offers "Grown-up Souvenirs from Yamagata and Shonai," featuring carefully selected local sake and snacks from Yamagata, a renowned rice-producing region, as well as crafts and accessories meticulously created by local artisans. These are premium items from Yamagata and Shonai that adults can truly appreciate.
There is also a mini-library with about 1,000 books, curated by book director Takatake Haba and Yamagata Design. With the theme "Adults and Children, Children and Adults," the selection includes books that allow adults to return to their true selves.
The shared building is open to the public as a communal space, and the mini-library, shop, and restaurant can be used without staying at the hotel. Additionally, there are 10 meeting rooms available for business or training purposes.
The guest rooms were also designed by Shigeru Ban. With large windows offering views of the rural landscape and rooms filled with the warmth of wood, the space provides a comfortable and tranquil environment, free from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The natural hot spring water, drawn from 1,200 meters underground, flows freely. The fitness area, located in the semi-basement, is equipped with machines focusing on full-body and endurance training. Both facilities will be available from the grand opening on September 19.
