Nifrel's First-Ever New Zone Focusing on "Poison," "Dokunifureru," Opens March 18, 2026 (Wed)!

At the living museum "NIFREL," a new zone called "Dokunifureru" (Touching Poison), focusing on the diverse abilities (skills) of creatures possessing "poison," will open on March 18, 2026 (Wednesday). "Poison," often associated with images of "fear" and "danger," will be reframed as a "unique characteristic" that creatures have acquired to survive. The zone will introduce the skills honed by each creature to protect its life—categorized into "attack," "defense," "mimicry," and "immunity"—in an intuitive and experiential manner, aiming to shift visitors' perspectives from "scary" to "amazing! Cool!"

Within the approximately 350㎡ exhibition space, a total of 33 species and 230 individuals of poisonous creatures, including fish, reptiles, and amphibians, will be displayed in 18 aquariums. Through the processes of observation, searching, and learning, visitors can experience the wisdom of evolution embodied in "poison."
The spatial design is handled by the design team minna, whose creative work on NIFREL's special exhibition "You Are a Fun Creature Too!" from 2024 to 2025 garnered significant acclaim. From graphics to spatial direction, they have crafted a world that captures the individuality of poisonous creatures with a pop sensibility, drawing inspiration from the colors and forms found in nature.

The in-house picnic cafe "EAT EAT EAT" on the second floor will feature original food menus inspired by "poison." Additionally, the museum shop "NIFREL×NIFREL" will offer original merchandise that playfully incorporates the colors and shapes of these creatures.

Poison is not something to be excluded, but rather a form of evolution chosen for survival. Let's question fixed perceptions and experience the power and beauty of diverse life at NIFREL.

Exploring the Diversity of Poison: A Space and Experience Where Perception Shifts

The "Dokunifureru" exhibition space is broadly divided into three areas.
The first area allows for close observation of creatures related to poison in independent aquariums, categorized by four skills: "attack" for capturing prey, "defense" for self-protection, "mimicry" for deceiving predators, and "immunity" for reducing susceptibility through resistance or defense.
The second area involves "searching" for non-poisonous fish among the poisonous fish swimming in two large aquariums. Close observation here offers the joy of new discoveries and shifting perspectives.
The third area is the "Curator's Corner," staffed by curators. Here, the properties of poison are explained using tools, and an original card set is available, from which eight types of creatures emerge when folded along the creases. This area offers a playful way to learn about the diversity of poison through engaging mechanisms.
