Jowita Budnik, a leading actress in Polish cinema, plays the poet Bronisława Wajs, known by the nickname "Papusza," meaning "doll." The cast also features veteran Polish actor Zbigniew Waleryś and popular actor Antoni Pawlicki, who together create a profound world.

Papusza Spreads Her Wings Through Poetry

Bronisława Wajs was born a Romani infant. Her mother, who loved dolls, named her daughter "Papusza," meaning "doll." Born into a Romani community that shunned literacy, viewing written words as "outsider spells" and "devil's power," Papusza was drawn to language and letters from a young age. She spread her wings through poetry.

Forced into marriage at 15 against her will, Papusza lived within the Romani society. One day, she met a male poet pursued by the police. As their relationship deepened, she blossomed as the first "poet" among Romani women, unleashing her talent.

However, her talent stirred ripples within the Romani community, whose law forbade revealing secrets to outsiders, and her life was irrevocably changed..

The film has received widespread acclaim, with artist Yoshitomo Nara commenting, "The flowing monochrome visuals slow the passage of time. The sounds of the traveling people stir the heart, but the story moves towards sorrow, and within the sheer beauty of the images, only that sorrow accompanies the protagonist's loneliness." The film's exquisite monochrome cinematography draws us into Papusza's poetic world.
