Pride | A Deep Bond Between Miners and a Gay Group

Pride, based on a true story of friendship between striking miners and a gay group in Britain, will be released nationwide starting April 4th (Saturday) at Cine Switch Ginza and other theaters.

Text by YANAKA Tomomi

Directed by Tony Award-Winning Matthew Warchus

Britain in the 1980s. A group of gay activists steps up to support the striking miners protesting pit closures under the Thatcher government. Pride, which depicts the unlikely connection between these two groups and won the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, is now coming to Japan.

The film is directed by Matthew Warchus, known for his work on stage and screen, including the Tony Award-winning stage production God of Carnage. The film faithfully recreates the streets and fashion of 1980s London, with iconic songs from artists like Culture Club, The Smiths, and Bronski Beat energetically fueling the narrative.

The cast features Ben Schnetzer, an American newcomer, in the lead role of the gay activist group's leader. Playing the Welsh mining community are acclaimed British actors Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton. Their profound performances brought out the best in the younger cast members.

London's Gay Community Extends a Hand to Welsh Miners

1984, Britain is in turmoil under the Thatcher government. Moved by the miners' strike, a young man living in London conceives an idea for a fundraising campaign for the workers and their families.

However, their offers of support are repeatedly ignored by the National Union of Mineworkers. The reason was simple: they were gay. To the union, they were simply people from another world.

Through a misunderstanding, a single mine agrees to accept their help. Invited as a thank you for the donations, they set off in a minibus for a mining town deep in Wales...

Overcoming misunderstandings and conflicts, they forge a strong bond and seize new lives. Pride joins the ranks of acclaimed British films set in mining communities, such as Billy Elliot and Brassed Off.
