A 78-year-old star’s first marathon attempt
The protagonist is Paul, a legendary runner and Olympic marathon gold medalist. He and his ailing wife, Margo, move into a retirement home. But at over 70, still vibrant in body and mind, Paul grows increasingly frustrated with the monotonous life at the facility. Unable to bear the regimented routine any longer, he makes a bold decision: to start running again after decades, ultimately resolving to compete in the Berlin Marathon. Margo, initially skeptical, is inspired by Paul’s dedication and begins to support him.
Tragedy strikes when Margo falls ill. Paul is diagnosed with ‘age-related depression’ and is forbidden from running freely. Can he still run the Berlin Marathon?
Director Kilian Riedhof, making his feature-length debut, was inspired by a newspaper article about an elderly man suffering from depression who was spurred on by his wife’s challenge: “If you don’t run, I’ll leave you!” The film, completed after an 11-year development period, features a highlight in its Berlin Marathon scenes, filmed during the actual 2012 race.
Hallervorden, a beloved German comedic actor, plays the lead role of Paul. He made history by becoming the oldest recipient of the German Film Award for Best Actor. At 78 during filming, it was his first marathon challenge, and he earned this honor through a physically demanding performance, including daily runs and three gym sessions a week, resulting in a 9-kilo weight loss.
Paul’s journey, refusing to give up no matter his age and defying the skeptical glances of those around him. The bond with his wife and friends who support his endeavor. Their lives, nearing their final chapter, promise to offer profound lessons and inspiration.
