A story based on the real experiences of screenwriter Bruce Wagner
At 71, David Cronenberg continues to deliver ambitious works to the world. His latest film, known for its exploration of madness and sweet illusions, is based on the real-life experiences of screenwriter Bruce Wagner, who once worked as a limousine driver in Hollywood.
Julianne Moore plays the actress Havana, earning her a well-deserved Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance. Mia Wasikowska, who previously appeared in Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis," also features, alongside Robert Pattinson and veteran actor John Cusack, rounding out a cast of accomplished Hollywood talent.
Sealed secrets come to light
The Weiss family is a quintessential Hollywood celebrity clan. Father Stafford is a successful therapist for celebrities, appearing on television. Thirteen-year-old son Benjie is a child star, having overcome his own struggles with drugs. Mother Christina, a devoted stage mother, is constantly occupied with finding roles for her son. On the surface, the Weiss family seems to have everything—wealth and fame—but they harbor a deeply buried secret.
Meanwhile, Havana, a fading actress undergoing therapy with Stafford, hires Agatha, a young woman with burn scars on her face, as her personal assistant through a mutual acquaintance. It turns out this girl is the Weiss family's eldest daughter, who was sent to a facility in Florida after causing trouble. Agatha's return to Hollywood begins to unravel the family's hidden secrets, setting in motion a chain of events that disrupts the lives of the family and those around them.
Black humor and violence permeate Hollywood, a city where fame, desire, and adoration are intensely concentrated. We are about to witness a "forbidden secret."
