Kim Ki-duk's "Harrowing Human Drama"

Director Kim Ki-duk has consistently confronted the fundamental "pain" of human existence, presenting numerous controversial works to society. 'Moebius' is one such film, facing screening restrictions in South Korea and standing out as particularly contentious even among his often extreme creations.

The story unfolds in an upper-class household of three, where relationships have grown cold. The wife, driven mad by jealousy upon discovering her husband's infidelity, turns her rage towards their son, committing an unprecedented act of violence. The son, whose genitals were severed by his mother, is plunged into despair, while the father, tormented by guilt, attempts to rebuild his relationship with him. When the mother, who had disappeared, reappears, the family begins to spiral further into ruin.

"Sex, Family, and Human Karma" Unveiled Without Dialogue

'Moebius' exposes the raw essence of "sex," "family," and "human karma." Director Kim Ki-duk, by eliminating all dialogue and constructing a unique worldview solely through the three emotional elements of "laughing," "crying," and "screaming," achieves a minimalist direction where the actors' extraordinary performances take center stage.

Seo Young-ju, a rising star in the Korean film industry, delivers a serene portrayal of the tormented son. Despite being only 15 years old, she masterfully navigates this challenging role, establishing herself as one of the most talked-about young actors in Korea today.

Cho Jae-hyun plays the unfaithful father, a performance hailed as embodying "Kim Ki-duk's persona." Having appeared in early works like 'The Crocodile' since Kim's directorial debut, he reunites with the director to explore uncharted territory together.

Lee Eun-woo committed to this film, staking her acting career. She brilliantly portrays both the jealous, deranged mother and the alluring woman involved with the husband, leaving a powerful impression on screen.

'Moebius,' a shocking work that directly confronts human karma—where father, mother, son, man, and woman, pain and pleasure, are intertwined—is undeniably an ambitious film where Kim Ki-duk himself poses the questions, "What is family? What is desire?" and pioneers a new artistic frontier.
