Tears Flow Uncontrollably at the Shocking Twist Awaiting at the End
The seemingly loving family of four who moved in next door were, in fact, North Korean spies acting out a fake family to complete their mission.──.
With its novel premise, unpredictable story filled with unexpected laughter and surprises, and a shocking conclusion, 'Red Family' captivated audiences with overwhelming support upon its screening at the 26th Tokyo International Film Festival last year, earning the Audience Award. The film is now set for its theatrical release starting October 4th (Saturday).
The production, screenplay, and editing were handled by the visionary Kim Ki-duk, who has previously delivered numerous provocative works. He received the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for 'Samaritan Girl' in 2004, the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for '3-Iron' in 2006, and achieved another remarkable feat by winning the Golden Lion at the same festival for 'Pieta' in 2012. He is a maverick who possesses both true talent and significant buzz.PietaHe is a maverick who possesses both true talent and significant buzz.
Kim Ki-duk, who states, "I wanted to create a film that questions what it means to be human and a family, and that offers a ray of hope for the future of both North and South Korea," poured his heart into the screenplay. He entrusted the direction to his protégé, Lee Ju-hyung, who studied film and digital art in France and makes his feature film directorial debut with this work. Kim Ki-duk, impressed by the director's short animated films, recognized his understanding of human suffering and his warm perspective amidst struggles, leading him to appoint him as the director for this film. Director Ju-hyung has fully met these expectations, successfully capturing the hearts of many audience members at the film festival.
Kim Yu-mi, known for 'Voice' (2002), plays the role of the North Korean spy unit leader who pretends to be the wife in the pseudo-family. She delivers a compelling performance in this challenging role, conveying sadness beneath her comical expressions. Furthermore, veteran supporting actor Song Byung-ho takes on the pivotal role of the grandfather, while Jung Woo plays the kind-hearted husband spy who cannot fully embrace his role's ruthlessness, and newcomer Park So-yeon is cast as the daughter. The team overcame the demanding shooting conditions through their strong teamwork.
'Red Family' tackles sensitive political themes while weaving in moments of dark humor, ultimately confronting the audience with the foolishness of humanity through the "ideal family" fabricated for mission execution. This is a film highly recommended for those who usually find Kim Ki-duk's works too intense.
