How Do Traditional Châteaux Respond to Growing Demand in China?
For centuries, Bordeaux wine, a symbol of wealth and power, was cherished by figures like Marie Antoinette. In 1855, at the Paris Universal Exposition, Napoleon III officially established the first wine 'classification'.
The four châteaux selected as First Growths—Lafite, Margaux, Latour, and Haut-Brion—along with Mouton Rothschild, promoted in 1973, are known as the 'First Growths,' solidifying Bordeaux's global standing. They continue to captivate numerous dignitaries and celebrities to this day.
However, behind the prosperity of Bordeaux wines lies a complex relationship with the global market and economy. In recent years, while traditional European and American clientele have declined, demand for red wine has surged in emerging markets, led by China, presenting Bordeaux wines with a significant challenge.
Facing China, which became the world's largest consumer of red wine in 2013 and seeks to acquire everything, how will the Bordeaux châteaux, which have long defended their world-class quality and pride, respond?
The film features wine journalists such as Robert Parker, global wine collectors, and director Francis F. Coppola, who also owns a winery. Russell Crowe narrates, revealing the little-known realities of the wine business.
