Korea's Acclaimed Actress Jeon Do-yeon Delivers a Powerful Performance as the Heroine
From Korea comes the shocking film ‘Way Back Home,’ depicting the true story of a housewife falsely accused of drug smuggling while trying to save her struggling family, leading to her imprisonment abroad for over two years.
The case, which deeply moved the Korean public when featured on the documentary program 'Chasing 60 Minutes' in 2006, has been brought to the screen by emerging female director Pang Eun-jin. Her emotional direction, honed by her own experience as an actress, is evident throughout the film.
Starring as the heroine, Jeong-yeon, who endures hellish days in her desperate bid to return to her family, is Jeon Do-yeon, one of Korea's most respected actresses. Her realistic portrayal, including her emaciated appearance as her imprisonment continues, is a must-see. Meanwhile, Ko Soo, highly popular in Japan, plays Jeong-yeon's husband, Jeong-be, portraying him with a deliberate air of ordinariness and pathetic weakness, a man whose own flaws drive his beloved wife into a desperate situation.
Jeong-yeon is Sent to Martinique, 12,400 Kilometers from Her Homeland
Upon arriving at France's Orly Airport, an ordinary housewife named Jeong-yeon is suddenly arrested. The charge: drug trafficking. Tricked into transporting what she believed to be a "raw gem" to help her husband escape crushing debt, she unknowingly carried narcotics.
A sudden arrest in a foreign land. Unable to speak the language or offer any defense, Jeong-yeon is sent to a prison in Martinique, an island in the Caribbean, 12,400 kilometers from her home country.
With the Korean embassy's negligent handling of her case, a trial is never even held. Back in Korea, her husband struggles alone to save her, but—.
“I want to see my family. I want to go home.” This single desire sustains her fragile thread of life. The "truth" of 765 days of struggle by an ordinary "good mother," an ordinary "good wife," in the depths of despair will deeply move viewers.
