Screenplay Co-Written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski
Seventeen years have passed since Good Will Hunting, the moving film co-written by a then-unknown Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and brought to life by Gus Van Sant. Now, Damon, who has since forged a diverse career, and Van Sant, who achieved critical acclaim with the Palme d'Or and Best Director awards at Cannes for Elephant in 2003, reunite for their third collaboration.
The story follows an elite executive, whose career has been a smooth ascent, as he suddenly faces a life-altering crossroads in an unfamiliar town, confronting the profound question of what it truly means to live a human life. The screenplay was co-written by star Matt Damon and John Krasinski, who also appears in the film as an environmental activist. Both men also served as producers, crafting a narrative about a man's turning point against the backdrop of contemporary American social issues. The supporting cast includes Oscar winner Frances McDormand and the seasoned actor Hal Holbrook, known for his role in Into the Wild.
Steve Arrives in a Rural Town to Acquire Shale Gas Drilling Rights
Steve, a rising executive at a major energy company, arrives in the small, farming-centric town of McKinley with his business partner, Sue. Rich in shale gas, McKinley's landowners, hard-hit by the recent recession, are targeted for their mineral rights, which Steve intends to purchase at below-market rates.
Their plan to quickly secure the town through a series of well-placed bribes is met with unexpected resistance.
A science teacher advocating for a referendum on shale gas extraction, and an environmental activist who suddenly appears in town, begin to sway the local population against the drilling.
Steve, increasingly desperate to salvage the situation, uncovers a shocking truth that fundamentally challenges his beliefs and passion for his work. This revelation forces him to re-examine his own life, leading to a decision he never anticipated.—
What is truly happening on the front lines of "shale gas," an energy source that could reshape the world? Matt Damon, Gus Van Sant, and John Krasinski—a trio of diverse talents—have crafted a human drama that resonates deeply, while also offering a sharp commentary on the social issues confronting modern America.
