A Dazzling Maverick in French Cinema
Jacques Tati, a leading French film director and a comedian from the music hall, created a unique body of work that garnered passionate fans worldwide. His meticulously crafted visual artistry captivated contemporaries like Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, and François Truffaut. The precise use of music and sound continues to influence countless musicians to this day.
The festival will feature six feature-length films, including the epic "Playtime," which led Tati to bankruptcy, the Academy Award-winning "Mon Oncle," his posthumously released and first theatrical "Parade," and the debut film "Jour de Fête (The Complete Edition)" with 17 minutes of previously unseen footage. In addition to these, seven short films, including works directed by his daughter Sophie Tatischeff, will also be presented.
For this digital restoration, the process involved meticulously studying Tati's production diaries, archival materials, and even personal letters to faithfully recreate his original intentions. This allowed for the careful selection of the best-preserved elements from existing materials and the successful reconstruction of Tati's intended editing as closely as possible for each film. This promises to be the definitive collection of Jacques Tati's work.
