The story of Philomena, a housewife whose tale captivated many, was published in the UK in 2009. Now, her journey to find her son, forcibly separated 50 years ago, with the help of a former elite journalist, from Ireland to America, has been made into a film.
Produced bythe team behind 'The Iron Lady' and 'The Queen.'Directed by Stephen Frears, it's a story that will make you laugh and cry.
Philomena, the protagonist who loves romance novels and speaks her mind, is played by Judi Dench, a British acting legend also known for her role as 'M,' Bond's superior, in the '007' series. The cynical, faithless former elite journalist is portrayed by comedian Steve Coogan, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pope.
Philomena reveals a secret hidden for 50 years.
'I have a son I was separated from.' One day, Philomena confides a secret she has kept for 50 years to her daughter, Jane.
Ireland, 1952. Pregnant as a teenager, Philomena is cast out of her home and sent to a convent. She gives birth to a baby boy, whom she names Anthony, but is only allowed one hour of visitation per day. When Anthony turns three, he is adopted out without Philomena's consent.
Jane, moved by her mother's unwavering love for her child, approaches Martin, a disgraced former investigative journalist. Philomena longs to see her beloved son, and Martin sees a chance for redemption in her story. Their unlikely journey, from two vastly different worlds, begins.—.
The film is a heartwarming tale that will make you laugh at the peculiar friendship between two mismatched individuals and cry at a mother's deep, poignant love. You'll be moved by the reality of families torn apart, and by the end, you'll surely find something precious alongside them.
