12 Years a Slave

Country of Production: USA, UK
Director: Steve McQueen
Now showing at TOHO Cinemas Miyukiza and other theaters nationwide from Friday, March 7th.

A "historic event" that rewrites the history of the Academy Awards!

There was a man born free, yet forced into slavery for twelve years. Solomon Northup. A real person. Steve McQueen, who has consistently depicted protagonists in extreme conditions since his shocking debut "HUNGER" in 2008, adapted Northup's memoir into a film. The result is a masterpiece that will go down in history.

McQueen says, "It's the story of a man torn from his family, dragged into a dark tunnel. But beyond that, there is light. The hope of one day returning to his beloved family. Hope triumphs over hardship." Due to the theme of slavery, production was difficult, and at one point, the project's survival was in doubt. It was Brad Pitt, who plays a pivotal character in the story, who stepped in to help. As a producer, he provided full support until completion. "12 Years a Slave" finally saw the light of day. It achieved the unprecedented feat of a film by a Black director winning Best Picture, and also brought Pitt his first Oscar at the age of 50.

Actor Jared Leto makes a complete comeback!

Jared Leto, known for "The Thin Red Line" (1998) and "Fight Club" (1999), and highly acclaimed for his role as a drug-addicted protagonist in "Requiem for a Dream" (2000). A multi-talented artist, he is known not only as an actor but also as the frontman for the rock band "Thirty Seconds to Mars." His disappearance from the screen after "Mr. Nobody" in 2009 was also due to his desire to focus on his music career.

Now he returns to the screen. Transforming from a rock star into a transgender woman infected with HIV. "The five-year hiatus definitely crossed my mind. But I couldn't even consider refusing it. Because I knew an unforgettable experience awaited me." Thus, he undertook an 18-kilogram weight loss and brilliantly portrayed Rayon, who, along with Matthew McConaughey's Ron, races to save HIV patients. Leto won his first Oscar.

Best Supporting Actress

Lupita Nyong'o12 Years a Slave

Country of Production: USA, UK
Director: Steve McQueen
Now showing at TOHO Cinemas Miyukiza and other theaters nationwide from Friday, March 7th.

A rising star achieves glory in her debut film!

Born in Mexico and raised in Kenya, Lupita Nyong'o later moved to the United States, where she studied acting and filmmaking at Hampshire College and the Yale School of Drama. She is 31 years old this year. Although she is a "rising star" making her feature film debut with this work, she has nearly a decade of experience in the entertainment industry. While producing films like "The Nairobi Affair" (2005) and "The Namesake" (2006), she also worked as an actress in television dramas and theater. Furthermore, in 2009, she made her directorial debut with the documentary "In My Genes."

Here, the talent of actress Lupita Nyong'o has blossomed. Her role is Patsy, a young Black woman who works alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor's Solomon Northup under the cruel employer Epps. Under the scorching sun, she toils, picking cotton, and is whipped if she doesn't pick enough, only to be cruelly toyed with at night. She portrayed a woman crushed by despair with overwhelming presence and achieved her first glory. As her name was called, Nyong'o tearfully expressed her gratitude, "Every time I look at this Oscar, I will remember that no matter where I was born, my dreams will come true."
