"No Man's Land," Acclaimed at Film Festivals Worldwide, Premieres in Theaters

Great East Japan EarthquakeIt has been nearly three years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Numerous films on the earthquake and nuclear accident have been produced. Now, the special screening series "Solidarity and ReconstructionFukushima" will present two documentaries that capture the events that transpired and the lives of those who continue to live there: "No Man's Land" and "Fukushima's Future0.23μSv (microsievert)."

"No Man's Land" is a work by director HARA Fujihito, known for his documentary "The Documentary: The Record of a Living Creature - Tsuchimoto Noriaki" and his feature films. It was screened at the Berlinale shortly after the first anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and has since received acclaim at numerous film festivals. The film is finally making its theatrical debut.

The film depicts landscapes devastated by the tsunami, rendered uninhabitable by radiation leaks, and captures the authentic voices of those who continue to reside there. It portrays the reality of radiation stealing the lives, culture, and history of the people who once lived in this seemingly beautiful scenery, where cherry blossoms bloom with the arrival of spring. The narration is by actress Arsinée Khanjian, partner of filmmaker Atom Egoyan, and the music is by bassist Barry Phillips, a leading figure in the global avant-garde music scene, creating a delicate yet powerful soundscape that resonates with the audience.

Fukushima's Reality, Chernobyl's Foreshadowing

Meanwhile, "Fukushima's Future" was produced by director Lee Hong-gi, who has been addressing issues that emerged with rapid changes in South Korea since the late 1990s. The film follows the lives of people living around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, unable to live ordinary lives, constantly carrying radiation detectors.

The 69-minute film also includes footage of the director and 17 citizens from across Japan visiting Chernobyl. The camera ventures into the control room, currently undergoing dismantling, to convey the damage caused by radiation.

Spring is arriving once again. Yet, the people of Fukushima live with sorrow and anger. As the third spring approaches, let us confront the ongoing "reality" through these truthful voices and moving documentaries.
