A Moving Film Depicting a New Form of Family: "What Maisie Knew"

Only your eyes can truly see what love is.──From the production team behind "The Kids Are All Right" comes "What Maisie Knew," a moving story about a new form of family for our times, opening January 31st (Friday) at TOHO Cinemas Chanter, Cinema Rise, and other theaters nationwide.

The Absurdity and Sadness of Adult Immaturity Reflected in Pure Eyes

"The Kids Are All Right," which depicted a new family structure of "two women in a couple with two children" and was nominated for four Academy Awards, was a groundbreaking film. The same production staff has reunited to delve into the truths of modern family life. This film takes a bold approach, telling the story entirely from the perspective of Maisie, a 6-year-old girl caught between her divorced parents.

Maisie is played with natural charm by Onata Aprile, who is of Japanese descent through her grandmother. Her transparent appeal is sure to win over everyone who sees the film! Also not to be missed are the girly and cute costumes designed by Stacey Battat, a frequent collaborator with Sofia Coppola. Julianne Moore plays Maisie's mother, and the currently buzzed-about Alexander Skarsgård plays her lover.

Maisie Tossed About by Selfish Parents

Maisie, a 6-year-old living in New York, shuttles between her art dealer father and rock singer mother every ten days following their divorce. Maisie is initially confused to find Margo, her former nanny, in her father's new home, but quickly bonds with her, as they were always close. Lincoln, her mother's kind-hearted new husband, also becomes an important friend to Maisie.

However, her parents, preoccupied with their own lives, gradually begin to delegate Maisie's care to their respective partners. Margo and Lincoln, pushed beyond their limits by the parents' whims, eventually leave. Meanwhile, her mother leaves for a tour, leaving Maisie alone and abandoned in the city at night.
