Their Memories, Now Transcended into True Love

Director Ingmar Bergman, creator of cinematic masterpieces like 'Cries and Whispers' and 'Autumn Sonata,' and actress Liv Ullmann. They met during the filming of 'Persona' in 1964, lived together for five years, and had a child. Though their romantic relationship later ended, they found a new form of love and went on to co-produce 12 films together throughout their lives.


The two forged a relationship that was both complex and utterly unique. Within it existed a world of love and hate, experienced only by those who strive for the pinnacle of art.


This is the story of an intensely felt bond, unfolded by two people who met as director and actress, loved as man and woman, and ultimately deepened their respect and understanding as human beings. The film illuminates their connection through interviews with Liv Ullmann, scenes from their many influential works, rare behind-the-scenes footage from the time, and even handwritten love letters from Ingmar Bergman to Liv Ullmann.



Ingmar Bergman passed away in 2007. Now, nearly 50 years after they first met, Liv Ullmann begins to speak candidly, from various perspectives, about their life together, their work, and their love and hate, from their home on Fårö island in Sweden where they lived together.

And scenes from their collaborative films, excerpted here, reveal how their personal relationship at the time profoundly influenced their cinematic creations.
