The International Film Festival 'Tokyo FILMeX' Opens Again This Year

The international film festival 'Tokyo FILMeX,' which gathers original cinematic works from Asia and around the world, opens again this year. From Saturday, November 23rd to Sunday, December 1st, a total of 26 films will be screened at venues including the Yurakucho Asahi Hall and TOHO Cinemas Hibiya.

The film festival 'Tokyo FILMeX' has consistently served as a bridge for meaningful encounters between filmmakers and audiences. This year, its 14th iteration, promises a lineup that will not disappoint.

The festival is organized into categories such as the Competition section, showcasing works by emerging Asian directors, and Special Invitation films, featuring the latest works from the world's most cutting-edge filmmakers. Furthermore, this year will feature retrospectives on the films of director Jean Grémillon, known as a 'treasure of French cinema,' and director Noboru Nakamura, whose centennial anniversary is being celebrated and who left an indelible mark on cinema both in Japan and globally.

Among the selections, the opening film, 'A Touch of Sin' (English title), is a highly anticipated work that powerfully depicts the struggles of individuals amidst China's rapidly widening social disparities. It received the Best Screenplay award at this year's Cannes Film Festival. The film's intense violent action is being hailed as a new frontier for director Jia Zhangke.

Also featured is 'The Missing Picture' (English title), directed by Rithy Panh, which is based on the director's own experiences in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime and won the Best Film award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

They will be joined by acclaimed directors such as Danis Tanović, who received three awards (Grand Jury Prize, Best Actor, and Ecumenical Jury Prize) at the Berlin International Film Festival, and Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who will serve as the jury president for this year's Tokyo FILMeX.
