Pursuing a Reality That Could Actually Happen
Israel and Palestine. If the children of these two nations, which have constantly been a flashpoint for global conflict, were switched, how would their families overcome such a trial?
French director Lorraine Levy realistically portrays a difficult problem that the world has yet to solve, as a personal family issue. She not only prepared meticulously but also incorporated daily feedback from her Israeli and Palestinian staff during filming to complete this moving family story.
Emmanuelle Devos, one of France's most respected actresses, plays the Israeli mother. Her son is delicately portrayed by Jules Sitruk, who previously starred as a child actor in "Young Caesar" (2003).
The film's greatest appeal lies in its ability to resonate with people worldwide, despite posing various questions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The mothers' struggle to act rationally, driven by their love for the children they raised, even as their longing for their biological sons overflows, is deeply moving, transcending nationality, ethnicity, and religion.
The Two Sons in Turmoil, the Fathers in Conflict, and the Mothers—
A Jewish family immigrates from France to Israel. One day, their only son undergoes a military health examination. Crucially, the results reveal the unbelievable truth: he is not their biological child. He had been switched at birth with a Palestinian baby at a hospital in Haifa. Eventually, this truth is also revealed to the other family.
Their identities shaken, the two families are confronted with questions of what constitutes family and love. What choices will they ultimately make in their lives?
Last year at the Tokyo International Film Festival, the film garnered significant acclaim not only from the jury but also from the audience, winning both the Grand Prix by unanimous decision and the Best Director Award. Through the hands that connect the two mothers, the film reaches towards the sons' future, creating a universal masterpiece that transcends nationality, ethnicity, and religion.
