Robert Redford, a celebrated actor and director, returns with his first starring and directorial role in five years in "The Company You Keep," a social thriller that exposes societal contradictions and life's ironies. Robert Redford, who has captivated the world as a leading heartthrob in Hollywood since the 1960s, has also made his mark as a director and producer, delivering masterpieces such as the Academy Award-winning "Ordinary People" and "A River Runs Through It." His latest work, "The Company You Keep," is a fugitive drama about a man who evaded capture for 30 years by assuming a false identity, despite being on the FBI's most-wanted list. This marks his first film in five years since "Lions for Lambs."
The film features Oscar winners Susan Sarandon and Julie Christie, among others, delivering powerful performances as former associates of a human rights lawyer, played by Robert Redford, who advocated against the Vietnam War and committed serial bombings. Shia LaBeouf, known for his roles in "Transformers" and other films, passionately portrays the journalist pursuing them.
Who is Jim Grant, the Human Rights Lawyer?
Jim Grant, a lawyer who handles human rights issues and a devoted single father to his 11-year-old daughter, appears to be an upright citizen, the very model of an American. However, his quiet life is shattered one day by a scoop article from a young newspaper reporter, Ben Shepard.
It turns out that Grant's true identity is Nick Sloan, a former leader of the radical group "Weatherman," which shook the United States in the 1970s.
Sloan, entrusting his beloved daughter to his brother, flees and evades the relentless pursuit of the FBI, visiting former "Weatherman" members scattered across the country. This is his fight to prove his innocence in a murder case from 30 years ago and reclaim a life with his irreplaceable daughter.
Inspired by a real-life radical group, "The Company You Keep" perfectly blends elements of a social thriller and a human drama. With Redford's mature direction and compelling performance, this marks the completion of his new masterpiece.
