Diverse Programs Including 'Asian New Wave' to Discover Emerging Asian Filmmakers

Launched in 1989 as the first international documentary film festival in Asia, the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival has actively introduced filmmakers such as Naomi Kawase, who won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul from Thailand. This biennial celebration will be held again this year.

Over the eight days, the 'International Competition' section will screen 15 carefully selected new documentaries from 1,152 submissions from 117 countries and regions. Additionally, in honor of the late Shinji Ogawa, who dedicated himself to the festival and longed for the growth of Asian filmmakers, the 'Asian New Wave' section will showcase works by emerging Asian documentary artists and is now known as a gateway for Asian talent.



In addition, there are other ambitious programs such as 'The Arab Spring: Diverse Perspectives,' which screens works that explore the 'Arab Spring' that began in Tunisia in 2011, toppling a long-standing dictatorship and spreading to neighboring Arab countries, viewed from various angles.The Great East Japan Earthquakeand 'Cinema with Us 2013,' which re-examines and conveys the unprecedented experiences and the ongoing challenges that arose from it.



The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival offers a glimpse into the current state of the world and Asia through documentaries. Experience a diverse collection of works by talented filmmakers against the backdrop of Yamagata in October, arguably the most pleasant time of the year.
