MOVIE | Robert Kramer's Elusive Masterpieces, 'Ice' and 'Milestones'
MOVIE | Two Films Capturing a Turbulent America in the 1960s Premier in Japan
Robert Kramer's Masterpieces, 'Ice' and 'Milestones' (1)
Filmmaker Robert Kramer, who passed away suddenly in 1999, continuously observed America and the world. His two masterpieces, 'Ice' and 'Milestones,' long considered lost, will be screened in Japan for the first time in 40 years, starting Saturday, August 10th, at Eurospace.
Text by YANAKA Tomomi
Screened in original 16mm new prints
In the midst of the anti-Vietnam War movement in the 1960s, Robert Kramer formed the avant-garde filmmaking collective 'Newsreel.' They released 50 works in four years, and he continued to produce films that sharply explored the boundaries between documentary and fiction. He was particularly renowned for his incisive gaze upon American society.
Kramer's masterpieces, which continue to influence many to this day but have been rarely introduced in Japan, are finally arriving. 'Ice' and 'Milestones,' which vividly portray an America at its most passionate and tumultuous—marked by the Vietnam War, anti-war protests, Woodstock, drugs, and the hippie movement—will have their theatrical premiere in original 16mm new prints.

'Ice': Depicting the Vietnam War in a Near Future Setting
'Ice,' released in 1969, is a vivid work of fiction set in the near future, reflecting the quagmire of the Vietnam War. Young revolutionaries begin guerrilla activities to break free from their state of hiding.
Meanwhile, in Mexico, the liberation front continues its struggle against the U.S. government. However, Black people, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans, who are equally victims of exploitation and share similar sentiments, cannot understand one another. The revolutionaries realize they must confront their own insecurities, doubts, and fears.
Then, revolutionary attacks erupt. Various actions escalate,—.
'Milestones': Six Stories Form a Vast Mosaic
'Milestones' can be seen as a self-portrait of the 'movement' generation, marking the end of one era and suggesting the possibility of new beginnings. Six narratives, featuring over 50 characters, interact with each other to create a grand mosaic.
This film depicts the lives of American left-wing radicals. It is a masterpiece that reflects the inner lives of people facing change in the complexly intertwined 1970s, and is considered a peer to Kramer's later work, 'Route 1/USA.'

These are the masterpieces of the singular filmmaker Kramer, capturing an America at its most passionate and vibrant. Experience the originals, which still leave a powerful impression, on this occasion.
