The 66th Cannes Film Festival concluded on May 26th. Held every May in the French Riviera town of Cannes, it is one of the world's three major film festivals. This year, a jury of nine, led by Steven Spielberg, selected the award winners from a pool of 20 nominated films.

Love of Same-Sex Partners, Music, Family... The Diverse Forms of Love Depicted in the Award-Winning Films

The Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, was awarded to Abdellatif Kechiche's "LA VIE D'ADÈLE - CHAPITRE 1 & 2," a film depicting a romance between two women. The Coen Brothers' "INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS," a strong contender, received the Grand Prix, while Asghar Farhadi's "LE PASSÉ" earned Bérénice Bejo the Best Actress award. Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Like Father, Like Son," which reportedly received a standing ovation that wouldn't stop at its official screening, won the Jury Prize. This marks the first Cannes award for a Japanese film since Naomi Kawase's "The Mourning Forest" (Mogari no Mori), making it a remarkable achievement for the Japanese film industry in six years.

Love Knows No Gender

Directed by Tunisian filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche, "LA VIE D'ADÈLE - CHAPITRE 1 & 2" (English title: "BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR") is a live-action adaptation of Julie Maroh's comic "LE BLEU EST UNE COULEUR CHAUDE" (English title: "BLUE ANGEL"), which captivated him. The protagonist, Adèle, is a 15-year-old high school student in France who has always believed that girls date boys. One day, she meets Emma, a woman with blue hair, and a new "something" begins to blossom within her. As Adèle experiences love, she grapples and struggles, ultimately growing as a woman and as a human being.

A Folk Journey in the 1960s

The Coen Brothers, who made history in 1991 by winning the Palme d'Or, Best Director, and Best Actor awards for "Barton Fink," once again captivated Cannes. The film is set in 1960s New York, in Greenwich Village, which would become known as the mecca of the folk scene. This is the era before Bob Dylan became a sensation, when folk music was still underground. The camera follows the days of a struggling folk singer dreaming of success, guitar in hand. Notably, the cast, including Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and Justin Timberlake, perform their own songs in the film.
