An Emotional and Serene "Kim Ki-duk World"
The film "Pieta," which emotionally and serenely depicts the human form, made strong yet fragile by love, through Kim Ki-duk's unique cinematic vision, is set for release in Japan. The shocking story is about to begin.
The film is directed by Korea's acclaimed visionary, Kim Ki-duk. His works, often shot on low budgets and in short periods, stir controversy in the Korean film industry with their inherent violence each time they are released. However, they are also passionately supported, garnering numerous awards at international film festivals.
Lee Jung-jin, a talented young actor, plays the debt collector who is also the son. He portrays the character of Kang-do, a man gradually regaining his humanity as he comes to know his mother's love, skillfully balancing ferocity with childlike vulnerability, drawing viewers into the narrative. Meanwhile, veteran actress Cho Min-soo delivers a performance of overwhelming presence and tension as the woman who claims to be his mother.
A Twisting Tale of Unexpected Turns
Kang-do, abandoned by his parents shortly after birth, has lived a solitary life for 30 years as a debt collector. One day, a mysterious woman appears before him, claiming to be his mother. This disrupts his ruthless daily routine of collecting debts.
Confused and suspicious, Kang-do gradually begins to accept the woman as his mother. Though previously known as the "devil who tests people with money," feared and scorned, Kang-do awakens to human emotions upon experiencing his mother's love and developing his own love for her. Simultaneously, he becomes consumed by the anxiety and fear of losing the one he cherishes and must protect. And when his fears materialize, what awaits him is...—.
"Pieta" refers to the image of the Virgin Mary holding the body of Jesus Christ after his descent from the cross. However, the story, with its twists and turns that defy all expectations, and the shocking truth revealed to Kang-do, along with a final scene that evokes the raw impulses of the soul, will leave viewers overwhelmed with unprecedented shock and emotion.
