A masterful balance of black humor, wit, and sharp observation
Based on the true story of a real Swedish men's synchronized swimming team's journey to success at the World Championships, "Swimming With Men" has been adapted into a film, relocating the setting to the UK. It will now be released in Japan under the Japanese title "Synchronized Daddies!".
Eric is a capable accountant working for a major corporation. His days consist of commuting between work and home, with no change in sight. His relationship with his wife, Heather, a politician's wife, is strained, his son mocks him, and he feels his life lacks purpose. Eventually, his wife kicks him out of the house, forcing him to live in a hotel. One day, at the public pool he frequents, he encounters a synchronized swimming team composed entirely of middle-aged men. By chance, Eric joins the team and, with them, aims to compete in the World Championships as the British national team! As he builds deep friendships with the members and throws himself into rigorous training, Eric begins to find purpose and vitality in his life. Can synchronized swimming help him mend his family ties as well...?
Eight men, facing "midlife crisis," come together as a synchronized swimming team, rediscovering the sparkle in their lives by pursuing a common goal. This "heart-warming" story has been brought to the screen with a masterful balance of the witty and sharp observations characteristic of British black humor.
The film is directed by Oliver Parker, known for "Johnny English Reborn" (11). The protagonist, Eric, is played by Rob Brydon, a leading British comedian familiar from Michael Winterbottom's films. Luke, a handsome real estate agent who strives to make the synchronized swimming team truly strong, is portrayed by Rupert Graves, who captivated young women across Japan in "Maurice" (87). And Jim Carter, who played the butler Carson in "Downton Abbey," takes on the role of Ted, the oldest member of the team, who calmly and precisely guides the members. The cast is filled with actors renowned for their exceptional comedic timing, charmingly bringing their characters to life.
