The Genius Reimagined Through Precious Testimonies, Footage, and Photographs
Jazz pianist Bill Evans, who left behind numerous masterpieces and profoundly influenced subsequent jazz generations, is the subject of a new documentary. To commemorate his 90th birthday, "Bill Evans: Time Remembered," a film capturing his 51-year life and music, is being released.
This work chronicles his origins, the start of his career, the human relationships that surrounded him, and his final moments, all through precious testimonies, footage, and photographs. It delves into a life filled with anguish, sometimes described as "suicide in slow motion."
The film touches upon his time in Miles Davis's band in 1958, contributing to the creation of "Kind of Blue." It then explores the formation of the legendary piano trio with drummer Paul Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro, the creation of the masterpiece "Waltz for Debby," and LaFaro's death. Furthermore, it includes previously unreleased insights into Evans's own thoughts on music, his private life as seen by his family, and the drug addiction that plagued him throughout his life. These personal accounts, along with rare performance footage, are presented within the 85-minute runtime.
The production took eight years to complete, featuring interviews with many elder jazz musicians who were active during his time, including Jack DeJohnette, Jon Hendricks, and Tony Bennett, all sharing their perspectives on Evans.

Among those interviewed are Paul Motian and Jim Hall, who had deep connections with Evans, as well as musicians like Bob Brookmeyer and Billy Taylor, many of whom passed away during the film's production. The documentary serves as a valuable record of their later years.
This acclaimed work has garnered awards for Best Documentary Film at various international film festivals, including the "Five Continents International Film Festival" and the "Montevideo International Film Festival."
